Why the Senators should trade their first round pick

On Saturday evening, the odds were against the Sens winning the first overall pick with a 2.5% chance. They ended up getting 12th. (The Leafs ended up winning, followed by the Jets and Blue Jackets.) But in an interview before the draft positions were announced, GM Pierre Dorion said "We would be willing to move down and trade our 12th overall pick for an immediate impact player." Now when GM Dorion said that it opened my mind to a possibility of trades...I realized teams that were out in the first round without a high pick would be calling, especially the Ducks. The Ducks GM Bob Murray, after announcing the firing of head coach Bruce Boudreau, stated that the core of the team may need a shakeup. Now for the Sens trading their first rounder it would most likely be needed for a top 6 forward and top 4/6 defenseman. I can't see the Chicago Blackhawks or New York Rangers making a huge trade. That really leaves the Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, and the Philadelphia Flyers. From those teams I see the Wild and Ducks as the best trading options. They both want to build off a good but disappointing season and would be looking to move up this draft. Players from the Ducks that I can see being traded for a 12th overall pick, that the Sens would be interested in, are as follows, Brandon Pirri, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Jakob Silfverberg, Simon Desperes, Sami Vatanen, and Cam Fowler. Everyone except Getzlaf and Perry are RFA'S this season and next season, so for them it would be either a trade at the deadline or in free agency. The Wild would trade: Thomas Vanek, Matt Dumba and Jared Spurgeon, out of those players only one is a RFA after the 2015-16 season, the Sens could just trade for Matt Dumba at the deadline for a much lower price. The Wild have the defensemen that would be nice to have and the Ducks have the forwards. It will be an interesting off season for the Senators, comment in our comments box on the bottom of our home page, more to come.
